Storms at Cape Cornwall
My name is David Williams, and I live in a wonderful part of the country, North Devon. Close to Exmoor to the east, Dartmoor to the south and Cornwall with all it has to offer to the west. What more could a photographer ask for?
I have been interested in Photography since a very early age. Started with a Practica SLR, using B&W only to start with. It was not long before I had my own darkroom in the garden shed. Hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Power would not run to a full heater, so it was me or the chemicals keeping warm, and it was me who got cold on most winter sessions. But from those humble beginings and enjoyment, more was to come.

It was some years later when I started colour using slides. At that time photographic paper did not give the range of colour you could get from slides. Even if you had to have a darkened room to view them. At the same time I did an evening course in Photography at the local collage in Maidstone, Kent. This was over a 2 year period, and was of great help in getting me started with real photography and not holiday snaps. A few years following on, I started to do my own colour photo's and slides in another darkroom. This time an area made into a room in the loft of my then house. Same problems as the shed, hot in summer and cold in winter, but I could use a heater being on the mains electric. This gave me a lot of fun and control over what I was getting out of my photo's. Slides were easy to develop yourself by this time, and that cut the cost down. Colour photo's needed a lot of time on each sheet developed, but it was all my own work, and that was a good feeling.
My cameras following on from the early Practica were Olympus. I have always found there cameras to be of a very high standard. OM1 followed by an OM2. Olympus flash gun for OFS metering along with off camers cables and leads, extention tubes for Macro work, which is another area I have always enjoyed using. So many unseen details await you if you try and capture them.

It took me some time to change over to Digital cameras. Most likely my dislike of computers did not help matters. Now I am converted!! It has taken time to learn the new language, but a lot of the basics are the same, and the ways to drive the camera have not changed, just a lot more control given to the photographer, and it is always the person behind the camera that makes the photograph, not the camera. With that in mind and the software one can master, a new field opens up. I do not use any Photoshop software. My photographs are very much what my eye could see through the view finder. I do a little editing in contrast, cropping and tones. However not too much as that is not what I wish to produce. A more natural image rather than an enhanced one is my aim.
My current camera is an Olympus E410, with two zoom lenses and a Macro lens for those close up views. We also have a very nice small Canon compact digital. This gives some very good shots and is so easy to carry around. June has this with her most of the time. Her early morning dog walks have produced some truly great shots.
The photograph's you can view on the following pages are of many different subjects and styles. They have been taken over the last 4 years. I have tried to log them in order, but some will overlap. New photographs are always being added to the site, as new work worthy to share is taken ( see update notes at top of this page ). Most of my work on this site can be purchased through Redbubble.
